But many people go looking for an alternative for the same few reasons: they do not want to edit tags by hand, they want submissions saved instead of only emailed, or they need features such as conditional logic that Contact Form 7 leaves to add-ons.

Here are six free alternatives, based on each plugin’s own pricing page and WordPress.org listing as checked on 10 October 2026.

Why people move on from Contact Form 7

The most common complaints are practical. Forms are built in a text editor with bracketed tags, which is quick for developers and confusing for everyone else. Submissions are emailed and not saved by default, so a lost email is a lost lead. There is no built-in CSV export, and conditional logic and multi-step forms come from third-party add-ons that you must find, vet and keep updated.

1. VuloForm

VuloForm is a free drag-and-drop builder that stores submissions in your WordPress database, exports to CSV, and includes conditional logic, multi-step forms, calculations, file uploads and webhooks. There is no paid tier. It does not take payments, and it is at version 1.0, so it lacks the years of community knowledge that older plugins have.

2. Forminator

Forminator’s free plugin also includes logic, multi-step forms, calculations, uploads and webhooks, and it adds Stripe and PayPal payments. If you need to take money through a form and want everything free, it is the strongest option on this list.

3. Fluent Forms

Fluent Forms Free offers a drag-and-drop builder, conditional logic, saved entries, CSV export and Stripe with a 1.9% fee. Multi-step forms, calculations, file uploads and webhooks need Pro, which is the lowest-priced paid option we compared at $63 a year.

4. Ninja Forms

Ninja Forms Core is free, saves submissions, exports CSV and includes calculations. Conditional logic, multi-step forms and file uploads are paid add-ons, so it suits you if you want a free base and may buy extras later.

5. WPForms Lite

WPForms Lite has a polished builder and includes Stripe, but it emails entries, with an optional backup to its own servers. Logic, multi-step forms, uploads and CSV export are on paid plans.

6. Formidable Forms Lite

Formidable Lite saves entries, exports CSV and includes Stripe. It is a powerful toolkit, especially if you later want to display entries on the front end, but conditional logic, multi-step, calculations and uploads are paid.

Quick comparison

In the free versions, in short:

Saves submissions and exports CSV: VuloForm, Forminator, Fluent Forms, Ninja Forms, Formidable

Conditional logic free: VuloForm, Forminator, Fluent Forms

Multi-step, calculations, uploads and webhooks free: VuloForm and Forminator

Payments in the free version: Forminator, Fluent Forms, WPForms Lite, Formidable Lite

How to switch safely

Do not delete Contact Form 7 first. Build the new form, publish it on a test page, and submit it yourself to confirm the notification arrives and the entry is stored. Then swap the form on your live page, check it once more, and only then deactivate the old plugin. If you have years of Contact Form 7 emails you need to keep, export or archive them from your mailbox before you remove anything.

How to choose between them

Start with the single feature you cannot live without. If it is payments, look at Forminator, Fluent Forms, WPForms Lite or Formidable Lite. If it is conditional logic, multi-step forms or file uploads without paying, the shortlist shrinks to VuloForm and Forminator. If you are happy with a free base and may add paid extras later, Ninja Forms fits that model.

Then look at data handling. Think about where submissions are stored, whether anything is sent to outside servers by default, and how easily you can export or erase one person’s entries. These questions matter more once a form carries real leads or personal data.

Finally, consider maturity. Plugins that have existed for a decade have enormous communities, tutorials and third-party help. Newer ones, VuloForm included, have fewer of those resources. Weigh that against how much you value a lean, privacy-first plugin with everything included.

One more practical point: whichever plugin you choose, run it for a week on a staging copy of your site if you can. Real submissions, real notification emails and a few deliberate test failures will tell you more about a plugin than any feature list.

If you only need a basic emailed contact form, Contact Form 7 is still a reasonable choice. If you want a visual builder and a place to review submissions, any of the options above will be a step up. VuloForm is free to try, with every feature included.

Looking for a Contact Form 7 alternative?
